I was born June 28th in Quincy, IL in small town of about 40,000 people. At the age of 13 my neighbor showed me what real music was for the first time. He played for me Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, ect. All the latest alt rock type stuff. At the age of 15 my family moved out to Wichita, KS. I spent the next two and a half years in the limbo between being a loser and being popular. I knew all the popular kids from classes and they would individually talk to me, but I was not accepted into their groups. It was a very strange place to be. All I had at that point in my life was my cd\'s, my mountain bike, and my golf clubs. (I had other things, but these were the only important ones). All I did was play golf then come home and sit in my room listening to bands like Rage Against the Machine, Korn, anything heavy I could get. I was pissed at the world and I didn\'t care who knew it. I was not a rebel or a troublemaker; I simply just didn\'t care about other opinions of me. I finished my senior year with decent grades and as the number one player on our varsity golf team (Only because I was the only person who actually played a good round in our last tournament).
I left to go to Kansas State University as a computer science major. After a year it wasn\'t working. And my parents had again moved west to Colorado Springs. I didn\'t have any reason to go back to Kansas after the summer was over since the girl I had been dating for over a year decided she couldn\'t handle the distance. My parents convinced me to stay out in Colorado to finish school.
A year went by pretty uneventful. I was starting to get into the local music scene, even was teching for a few bands here and there. the next summer I picked up a copy of the June 2001 spin magazine where they had the excerpts from Don\'t Try this at Home. I was immediately intrigued. I took a road trip back to Kansas to see a friend get married. While at a record store I saw the TNO album. I gave it a quick listen thought it was good and bought it. I spent the 8 hour drive back to Colorado listening to the album. I became even more intrigued about Dave. I started listening to Jane?s Addiction and One Hot Minuet. And to this day I am searching for rare Dave memorabilia and music.
I don\'t like to the word shrine as much as I like to think I am a collector. The only room my girlfriend will let me put it all up in is my bathroom. So it will eventually look like a Dave shrine and people will think I am weird.
Oh well understanding how Dave has been through things has helped me through so much. It has saved me from being completely lost and helpless. |
